Dangerous Black Bear

Crystal and I had fun photographing the Black Bear that came to visit, until we realized he wasn’t afraid of us!

Bears can be dangerous any time but usually if you make enough noise they will leave you alone. Not Bertie! The more we watched him, talked at him and photographed him, the closer he came. We knew he was VERY dangerous when we had to close the sliding glass doors because he was coming right up on the porch. He actually bit, twice, at the glass door. If I’d opened the door I think he would have come right in and laid down on the carpet to watch TV! Actually I was expecting him to stand up on his hind legs demanding to come in, but he gave up and wandered off to the beach.

Later in the day I let Hugo out, thinking the bear had left. Hugo sniffed him out (or the bone of Hugo’s that Bertie stole) and got a little close. The bear half-heartedly ran uphill after Hugo while Crystal yelled at Hugo, the bear and me. Hey, the dog’s gotta pee and I’m NOT going out there…

Our neighbour phoned this morning to say the bear was at her place and came toward her rather than away when she made noise. Then, another neighbour phoned to say he’d been on their patio opening the garbage can. Uh oh – this bear is too dangerous to just ignore – we’re going to have to phone the conservation office to have him removed.

That’s why I don’t like living too close to nature. It’s awfully scary at times! We had bear sightings when I lived in the Pocono Mts. The bear would come into the garage and take birdseed and eat it. No thanks!

I like living close to nature but this is too close, We fence our backyard so my Autitisc son can be kid and play. We haven’t seen a bear but have coyotees in the area frequenlty.
