Bear Update

Crystal and Grandpa were watching the bear out the window this morning as he meandered around the back yard, eating grass. When I got out of bed I looked for him but he wasn’t in the area they saw him. As I stood in the kitchen I noticed a movement by the garage. As I waited, Bertie the Bear stuck his head around the corner and walked over to smell my car. No doubt hoping for another of Hugo’s bones.

He came closer and closer to the porch, stealing some nice new shoots from the garden and headed around the side of the house. My camera battery was dead so I plugged it in immediately while Crystal got her camera ready. As the bear came round to the front of the house Crystal videoed while I held the door open for her – ready to slam it shut if the bear came too close.

He walked right up on the porch and bit at the sliding glass door – twice. His teeth were BIG – and really yellowed. I think this bear has a few years on him as his teeth looked bad, his snout has a lot of grey and he is not in the least afraid of humans or our noises.
Bertie made off with 2 more of Hugo’s bones and ambled down to the beach. I decided to let Hugo out an hour later and he raced around the front yard sniffing and barking. He finally found Bertie and Bertie was a little angry at being bothered and took a run up the hill at him. Of course Hugo came running for the door, with his fur standing on end, and Crystal yelled at the bear – and the dog – and me.

Jeez… they both live here and better learn to respect each other’s territory. I’m not keeping Hugo in day and night and Pop and I are not staying in the house when the weather is good. I might have to buy an airhorn to scare the bear if he comes too close or is annoying us. For now, it’s fun and very exciting to see a bear up close but in the wild.
It might not be quite so much fun if one of us come across him unexpectly outside!

ReplyI totally love that you were able to get pictures this time. I have to admit that I’m a little jealous that you’re that close to natures creatures. It’s completely awesome that you get to see a bear so close.
