A Day in Hugo’s Life

Hugo, the Boston Terrier is a fierce guard dog with a shrill bark and a big dog attitude. He keeps most people in their cars if they dare to drive down ‘his’ driveway with his fearsome ‘tude,

but he’s fearless as well, most of the time.

A few days ago he saw seagulls on the float and begged to go outside. Pop opened the door for him and he raced down the walkway, onto the first float and jumped the 3 foot gap between floats and came to a sliding stop on the slippery wood. Of course his loud barking scared the seagulls into flight so he sat and watched them fly away.

He turned to come back to the house but saw the large gap between the floats and realized he was stuck. The gap was too large to jump from a standstill and he’s fallen in the water previously so he knew that wasn’t a good option. Pop had seen all this happen so he called to me to say, “Heather, Hugo is stuck on the float!”

Just in case you are wondering why there is such a large gap between floats, it’s because the winter storms tend to damage the floats. Since we don’t have any boats at the floats in the winter we don’t need access. To prevent the plywood crosswalks from damage we remove them and store them, tied down, on the float (actually Sean did the job this year). In the Spring we’ll put them back.

I watched him for a minute as he paced back and forth, thinking of jumping. I opened the door and called to him to, ‘Stay’, so he sat on the wet float until I put on my raincoat and boots. Of course I was in too big a hurry to grab my camera.

Hugo watched as I came down the dock with a pike pole and as I got near, I could see him trembling. Poor little thing – he was scared to death of falling in. I used the pike pole to hook the boom chain and pulled the two floats together so he could jump the foot wide gap.

I thought I might get a thankyou, but Hugo raced to the house and was waiting at the door for me when I got back. This big scare of the day tired out poor little Hugo and he slept the afternoon away, like a baby.

Haha – yes, typical Hugo! This morning when I let him out he didn’t come right back so I went out to look and call him. He was on the beach, chest high in the cold water trying to reach a big stick. I know he would have swam for it if I hadn’t yelled at him to get out of the water – LOL! He came in shivering and sat in front of the fire after I dried him. Sometimes, he’s more trouble than a 5 year old… :)

Poor little guy! He’s so cute! I love that picture of him sleeping – very adorable! Didn’t he have his own blog – if so, does he still have it?
