    WOW…That’s insane… A really, really bad spot for your tug boat to go over that’s for sure. When did this happen?

    @Crystal :
    10 minutes before slack tide – on the 19th or 20th I think. The crew members are very lucky there was help nearby. Good lesson for all of us to be extremely careful near the Skookumchuck. It doesn’t often give up survivors…

    10 mins before slack??? I didn’t look like it was running much… How badly do you have to screw up to dump your tug 10 minutes before slack?!

    @Sean :
    I showed Grandpa the video and he thinks the current caught the barge, and the tug tried to pull it round, perhaps using more throttle on one engine – and the stars just weren’t aligned right for that skipper :(

    I was very impressed at how he stayed with his boat, yelling directions to the other tug to get a line on the barge and pull it out of there. Can you imagine if the barge had gone aground and spilled diesel… yikes.

    The guy the kayaker towed to safety is one lucky fella, huh – the story I heard was that he was sleeping when it happened but managed to get himself out and the kayaker spotted him when he popped up to the surface. I think he was the one who had a concussion and was kept in hospital.

    The others were at the Backeddy that evening, celebrating life – and hopefully buying the kayakers a beer!
