My Daughter is College Bound – Again – Financial Tips Much Appreciated!

I’m thrilled my daughter wants to head back to college and I want to help her financially as much as possible. If you’ve been through the whole ‘Campus Routine’ perhaps you could send me some tips – please?!?
It used to be that college students lived on mac and cheese, hotdogs, scrimped and worked part time, but those days seem to have disappeared and now they go ‘out’ to eat with friends, buy designer clothes and certainly don’t have time to work if they plan to get good grades. No more studying by candlelight to save electricity – it’s all about computers, ipods, digital cameras and cell phones now.
Thank goodness Sears has come up with a wonderful idea – Reload-able Gift Cards – the parent loads the card with money and the student uses it as needed. I’m thinking ‘birthday money’ from Grandparents and other relatives or friends could go a long way to helping your student with financial burdens and teach them responsibility, if it was used this way. The Sears CampusReady cards are available in-store at Kmart and Sears and are re-loadable online. Now that’s easy!
I added the CampusReady on Facebook application and tested it. There are tons of items suggested, a Dorm Room Designer program which your college bound student is sure to love and even a Roommate Matchup. I really like the idea of the Dorm Room Designer program as it will shows you in 3-D exactly how your furnishings will fit in the correct size room. After designing a room, your student may choose to be a designer! You can shop for necessary items while designing then share your ideas with your roommate.
No wonder my daughter wants to go back to college! I might be persuaded to join her – at least in the planning, design and shopping department.

Hi Heather,
One thing I have to completely agree with you about – that times have changed in the most unexpected ways. Reloadable gift cards are the best idea and a neat way for the young adults to start handling their financial affairs properly.
Enjoy whatever time you have with your daughter,
Daria
