Power Outages Drastically Decreased

Three years ago, a huge storm ripped through Egmont, downing 100’s of trees and cutting electricity for 10 days. If you recall, the same storm decimated Stanley Park.
Pop lost all the food in his fridges and two freezers and it was a huge clean-up job of course. Luckily we are able to dispose of the food in the saltwater and burn the paper wrapping. I wrote a letter to Hydro asking for reimbursement but they graciously declined – as I expected. It was annoying but living in a remote small town it’s one of those hazards you take in stride.
Since then a new system of lines has been installed in areas where a high incidence of branches and trees tend to knock out the power lines.
We watched the progress as the hydro crews replaced the lines, at times blocking the lane with their bucket trucks, hogg & davis cable puller and cable reel trailer. The cross bars on the poles were removed and a heavy cable holding diamond shaped brackets were installed to support the wires. This system is stronger and less susceptible to breakage of the wires by branches and small trees being blown down in the strong winds which are prevalent in the area.
This new system seems to be extremely effective and power outages have been minimal since then, thank goodness. I don’t expect to find a freezer full of spoiled food this Spring when we go to Egmont!
