Are you an aspiring actor with perhaps a unique talent? Do you love to sit and chat with others, read your book or knit? Are you an ordinary person, perhaps with a bit of a quest for adventure?
On TV shows and in movies, behind the main action, you will see see crowds of people, people on the street, people walking dogs, riding bikes or sitting in restaurants – well… those people are called ‘Extras’ and they are paid to be on set.
I used to work as an ‘Extra’ on many TV shows, including the X-Files, and movies – ‘Carpool’ comes to mind, and I loved it. Talk about meeting interesting people, rubbing elbows with big stars… and going to interesting places, doing cool jobs – and being paid!
The X-Files was a huge hit and people were absolutely knocked out when I said to watch for me in the background of the next episode. The work was so easy and I earned between $100 and $300 a day, depending on the time and the job. Usually no dialogue is required of the extras, but if you do speak, you earn MORE. If you are asked to do a special job, you are paid more. If you are required to bring a prop, you are paid more. One day, I was requested to bring a dog. I didn’t own a dog, but I quickly borrowed one. We sat in the extra’s tent all day then walked down the sidewalk once – that was it… and I was paid to sit around and wait to see if they needed us again. And, the doggy didn’t ask me to share the pay! Another time, I was asked to ride a bicycle through the park – that was a fun day. If you have access to an interesting vehicle, they love that too, so be sure to mention it.
