Have Cat Will Travel

“Mommmmmmmmmm”, Sean wailed from the back seat of my 2 door navy blue Thunderbird as we rocketed along the road, Kent behind the wheel taking the corners like Mario Andretti.

“What?”, I asked, bracing myself and turning to look at him.

“Scruff is getting sick”, he said.

“Where, where, can I see?’, asked 4 year old Crystal.

“Right here ‘Puke Face’, look at her beside you”, Sean said in exasperation.

Kent glanced in the rearview, I looked, Crystal bent over from her car seat to look and Scruff upchucked the kitty food I shouldn’t have fed her right before leaving home.

Crystal, watching intently, immediately upchucked her breakfast down the front of her new dress she so proudly was planning to show Grandma.

Sean moaned and said, “Ohhhh, I don’t feel so good”.

I gagged and said, “Kent, pull overrrrrrrr”.

Kent opened the window and said, “I can’t pull over, there is no shoulder. Besides, they’ve already gotten sick, what good will it do to pull over?”, and kept driving. Men! Kids! Animals!

Traveling with animals is a challenge at the best of times, but throw in a full stomach a twisty, turny road and an impatient man and you have a family war. I wish I had access to tips on traveling with animals in those long ago days!

Our animals still travel with us, but I’ve learned a few tricks, like not feeding the animal a heavy meal before leaving home, and we try to stay at pet friendly hotels along our route, to avoid smuggling the cat or dog in under our coats!

It helps to leave the kids at home too!
