June 10 is Egmont Day!
The fishing derby starts at 10:00 am (with coffee & muffins) and the parade is at noon. Yes, really, a parade…and guess who is riding in the parade as the oldest resident of Egmont? Pop was asked to be part of this year’s festivities and he’s very pleased. Hopefully he will ride in a convertible driven by a pretty girl! Oh, and it’s his 93rd Birthday the day before – June 9.
All afternoon there are games, races, fundraisers and fun. A “cake walk” (my favorite) will be held in the Community Hall – yes, you can donate a cake
and a penny drive to benefit the Egmont Volunteer Fire Department – yes, you can donate your pennies
Skookum Burger eating contest, wood cutting, a car smash, dunk tank and basketball tournament are also planned.
Dinner is aSalmon Barbecue at 6 pm and the dancing starts at 8:30.
The Egmont Museum may have an open house that day as well, for everyone to see how much progress has been made. I snuck a peak in the windows last week and was very impressed. Not only is the building a wonderful west coast structure built of fir and cedar, but the displays are looking very interesting and very professional. There are Japanese glass balls, old saws on the walls, old engines and outboards on display and my Auntie Lela’s fabulous bottle collection is set up on glass shelves in the windows. I just found out Thursdays are volunteer days so Kent and I plan to see if we can help in any way next week. I also learned the Museum Society is selling “Patron Memberships” as a way to raise funds for operating costs while the museum is being finished. $100.00 will buy you a lifetime membership and will be a huge help to the Skookumchuck Heritage Society.
So far, 15 of my family members will be attending Egmont Day – and I hope lots more people will join us for a fun-filled day in support of the community.
